Holy Family Knanaya Catholic Forane Church Rajapuram
Our Story
Rajapuram Holy Family Forane Church represents a remarkable chapter in the history of the Knanaya migration to Malabar. Established under the leadership of the Archdiocese of Kottayam, the parish is the result of the first organized migration to this region, marking a significant moment in the community’s journey of faith and resilience.
In the 1940s, increasing population and the scarcity of agricultural land in Central Travancore compelled many families to seek new opportunities. Under the guidance of Bishop Mar Alexander Chulaparambil and the visionary planning of Prof. Joseph Kandoth, this migration was carefully organized. On February 2, 1943, the first group of 72 families arrived in Rajapuram via Kanhangad, settling across areas such as Rajapuram, Chullikkara, Kallar, and Malakkallu.
What was once a dense and challenging forest landscape was gradually transformed through the hard work and determination of these early settlers. Alongside building their livelihoods, they established a strong faith community centered around the church. Over the years, Rajapuram Holy Family Church evolved beyond a place of worship into a center for social and educational development, with the establishment of institutions such as St. Pius X College, along with other essential facilities.
Today, the church serves as the headquarters of the Rajapuram Forane under the Archdiocese of Kottayam. It continues to stand as a symbol of faith, unity, and perseverance, reflecting the enduring spirit and legacy of the migrant community that laid its foundation.
